Hearing on Appeals Against May 9 Suspects' Bail Postponed Until After Eid

Islamabad: The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing of the Punjab government's appeals against the bail of suspects involved in the May 9 incidents until after Eid.

On Monday, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, began hearing the appeals. During the proceedings, Punjab government's counsel, Zulfiqar Naqvi, informed the court that he had received his notification for representing these appeals only two days ago.

He further stated that there are over 100 appeals seeking the cancellation of the suspects' bail, and he has not yet had the opportunity to thoroughly review them. Therefore, he requested the court to adjourn the hearing.

Expressing displeasure over the request, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi remarked that the practice of delaying hearings must change.

Subsequently, the court accepted the Punjab government's request to postpone the hearing for a few weeks, announcing that the case would now be heard after Eid-ul-Fitr.

It is noteworthy that the Lahore High Court had previously granted bail to the May 9 suspects, a decision the Punjab government has challenged in the Supreme Court seeking its cancellation.
